It seems that 2010 will be a busy year for me.
Although the past few months have involved a lot of staring at screens and pointless Internet surfing, I return to university in a month or so, and have taken on a second job, which I start on Tuesday.
A quick list of what 2010 will involve regarding university and work:
- Completing the second year of my B.A.
Still with majors in psychology and anthropology. In addition to just “completing” it, I also need to maintain a First-Class Honours average grade in psychology so I can complete an Honours year in 2012, which will allow me to study postgraduate psychology, which, in turn will qualify me to have a career in psychology. I’m still undecided whether I’d prefer to be a practising clinical psychologist or an academic. - Continuing work at my casual job at the DVD rental store (Job One)
It has proven to be fun so far — I enjoy working there. It also comes with the bonus of free rentals. For example, I rented Up recently, which is Pixar’s best film to date (Wall·E is overrated!), and Orgazmo (a colleague recommended it), which had a few cheap laughs, but was generally crap. I also get an $0.75 pay rise in the not-too-distant future, which is a bit exciting. As a casual, though, it’s impossible to predict annual income with any degree of certainty. - Starting my second casual job at a computing department (Job Two)
Some of the tasks I may complete include user authorisation, collecting payments for payable services, replenishing printer consumables, providing support in the use of hardware and software, and aiding in repair and maintenance of equipment. I’m sure I will enjoy this job; it seems that there’s a fair amount of independence, and having many different tasks to do is excellent, too.
I struggled with the concept of “how much is too much, when blogging about your job?” whilst writing this entry. I think the information I wrote is fine, but I probably wouldn’t go into much more detail at all.
I know what you mean about trying to figure out the fine line when blogging about work. I wrote up an entry about my internship last week but then deleted it after I was done. It didn’t go into that much detail, but I’d rather be safe than sorry when it comes to blogging about work life, you know?
I don’t mind talking about my job very much. I never ever ever put the name on my blog – and since I don’t do that, I feel like I can complain as much as I want.
I also don’t mention names of co-workers (but I never mention names of people on my blog anyway).
I am jealous of your job! D: (And I definitely agree that Up > Wall-E.)
(Oh, and you’re not part of a union at the DVD place?)
Dude, when are we doing that zombie movie night with your free movies?
@Clem: Hmm, I don’t think I’m part of a union there. Knowledge fail right there — I should know for sure!
@Amanda: Haha, I forgot about that/didn’t know if we were serious
But I’m free most nights.
i don’t feel comfortable talking about work on my blog, so I just stick with not mentioning it at all, beyond in passing. But hey, are you pursing your psychology qualifications through the B Arts degree through the American system I heard Monash/Melbourne had adopted (clumsy sentence, urgh!)? Personally, I find that method far more practical than jumping straight into a specialized degree out of high school.
I liked both Up and Wall E, but as with most animated films (like Happy Feet), I can’t warm to the ending — I like every bit BUT the endings, so often! If we weren’t comparing Pixar animations — Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is beautiful.
@Jen: It’s just my uni that has adopted, so we’ve got just six undergraduate degrees now. However! It’s already regulated by certain bodies that you have to complete a Master’s degree (so, minimum six years at uni) to become a registered psychologist, so it hasn’t affected me too much at all!
Sounds like a busy year indeed!
I’m glad someone else thinks Wall-E is overrated! I liked it, but it just didn’t appeal to me on the same level that most other Pixar films do. It definitely lacked the emotion that Up has.
I enjoy jobs that give me some degree of independence as well, and it’s always good to have several tasks. Makes the day go by faster!
