2010 Summer Holidays

University has resumed for 2010! I now have 12 fewer hours of free time each week, woe. Closer to 20 when you consider travel time, breaks, etc. Not that I’ve ever been short of free time, or anything. After one week, biopsychology has had the most interesting lectures, just as expected.

Anyway, here’s a list of a few things I did over my rather uneventful three-month break, which I haven’t mentioned on this blog yet. Lists are way fun, am I right?

  • Watched a bunch of movies
I can rent free DVDs from work, and have been taking advantage of it. Keeping a list of all the movies I see is pretty fun, I don’t know why.
  • Started to knit a scarf
Definitely not one of the more masculine hobbies I could have chosen, but I was so inspired by Tom Baker’s scarf from Doctor Who, that I just had to learn. In fact, I completed one scarf a while ago (with the help of my mother), but it is a bit mistake-ridden, far too wide, and as a result, heavy and not very wearable. My second attempt (it’s about 40% finished) is much improved, and all my own work. I’ve attempted photos, but the colours really don’t capture well on my camera.
  • Read books
I don’t read nearly as much fiction as I used to, but I recommend The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen, which I received as a Christmas gift. It’s fascinating in the way it has intersting maps, diagrams, and other illustrations, in the margins of the pages (all relevant to the story, of course). Non-fiction I’ve been perusing includes The Definitive Book of Body Language, as well as a few pages here and there of psychology textbooks.
  • Watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I’m unashamedly a Buffy fan, now. While sometimes too heavy on teen relationship angst, it’s an addictive show. I whizzed through the first five seasons (as well as interspersing Angel for the crossovers [/nerd]), and will get to the final two when I have a suitable break. I currently have a few marathon-y shows in my backlog, which are, of course, reserved for holidays..! Some people prefer movies to TV shows, but a good serialised TV show is my weakness. I get addicted quickly and marathon the hell out of them. Procedurals don’t really do it for me, though. As for those, Bones is the only one I bother to keep up with.
  • Kept up with the final season of Lost
So Lost shall be forever immortalised as one of the greatest shows made. I’ve been watching it since the beginning, and although it will be sad when it’s over, it’s also exciting. In fact, I think I’ll be more excited about the final episode of Lost, than I was for the final episode of Battlestar Galactica. And that is saying something, it really is. At this point, I’m wondering how they are going to wrap Lost up, and how they’re going to do it in only three months.
  • Re-played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I still have my good ol’ Nintendo 64, and I got the urge to replay both Zelda games a few months ago. People who read my tweets will be aware of that. In the last week or two, I started playing again, and am almost finished. I was probably about ten years old the last time I played the entire way through! Ocarina of Time is one of the best N64 games there is, but I think I prefer the sidequest-y nature of Majora’s Mask.

Minus the knitting, that’s pretty much how I spend my summers! I can’t wait for university when my summer will be 4 months instead of 2.

So productive! Books, movies, games, TV and now crafts. But who indeed wouldn’t be inspired to knit by the 4th Doctor’s scarf? :D

Have you watched Supernatural? You’ve mentioned 4 of my favorite shows in this post and I wanted to contribute something. (But I don’t like Angel or Bones, heh.)

@Maria: I haven’t seen Supernatural, but I hear about it a lot! I seems to be more aimed at girls than guys — am I right in assuming that?

I approve of you knitting a scarf! I taught my boyfriend in high school how to knit. It’s not as hard as it looks, and I think it’s a really useful skill to have. :D Besides, now that you’ve mastered (I assume) knitting and purling, you can pretty much knit anything :D

@Adam: You know, I would almost disagree with that if it weren’t for my obvious bias towards one of the characters. lol

But no! I really believe that the show has a good plot. Particularly because I like scaring the hell out of myself with urban legends. and a lot of my guy friends like it, more so than the girls!

I’ve seen that T.S. Spivet book around and thought it looked interesting. Since you liked it, I’ll have to check it out.

Buffy is one of my favorite shows. I actually just started re-watching it because it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the earlier seasons. Good TV shows are a weakness of mine too. If they’re done well, they can be so much more involving than movies. I’ll admit I’ve wasted a lot of time watching marathons of my favorite shows. :P

Ocarina of Time is still my favorite Zelda game. :)
